It was not unusual for men to take names from both their paternal and maternal lines or, as in this case, to add cognomina based on marriage ties. The determining factor was likely the social and political prominence of the family with which the name was associated. The freedom to modify or expand one’s name often produced incredibly long combinations, making the task of disentangling an individual’s familial connections an extremely complex and uncertain one.
