Africa was once a key concentration of Britain's international coverage less than Tony Blair. army intervention in Sierra Leone, raises in relief and debt reduction, and grand tasks corresponding to the fee for Africa validated the continent as a spot within which Britain may perhaps 'do good'.

Britain and Africa below Blair: in pursuit of the great nation significantly explores Britain's fascination with Africa. It argues that, below New Labour, Africa represented a space of coverage that looked as if it would go beyond politics. progressively, it got here to embrace an amazing nation task round which politicians, officers and the broader public may perhaps coalesce, forsaking extra contentious family and foreign issues.

Building at the tale of england and Africa below Blair, the ebook attracts wider conclusions concerning the function of 'good' and idealism in overseas coverage. specifically, it discusses how foreign relationships offer possibilities to create and pursue beliefs, and why they're crucial for the wellness of political groups. It argues that kingdom actors undertaking the assumption of 'good' onto idealised, far away gadgets, that allows you to repair a feeling of the 'good state'.

However, there is another role for utopias, which is concerned with the ways in which communities imagine themselves as perfect and connected to good, and how such imaginations can provide relief for reality, creating a sense of communal repair. Collective fantasies of a good life, the creation of a sacred core at the heart of compromised reality, can provide essential psychological underpinning for a community. This second role ties into Durkheim’s suggestion that the existence of a pure, sacred space at the heart of a social organisation is an essential way to maintain a connection to a source of good, and underwrite a community’s faith in itself (Durkheim, 2001).

Notes â•⁄1 Amitai Etzioni provides a more static and uniform account of communiÂ tarianism (Etzioni, 1995). This approach has been quite reasonably criticised for presenting a too uniform, too static view of society (Kymlicka, 2002). â•⁄ 2 See, for example, Stephen Chan’s description of the US tendency to view foreign policy challenges in terms of good and evil (Chan, 2005b). â•⁄ 3 More tangible and political forms of utopia did, of course, become the ambition of succeeding generations of Jews.

Methods and map of the book In Britain, Africa is often seen as an undifferentiated entity based, as I have argued above, largely on British imagination. In government policy terms, the continent is often treated as a whole – subject of a ‘Marshall Plan for Africa’, a ‘Commission for Africa’ – and less is said or known publicly about country-specific policies. Therefore, much of this book looks at Africa, through British eyes, as a homogenous whole. At certain points it will, however, be useful to have a tighter geographical focus, and I have chosen Nigeria and Sierra Leone for this purpose.
