9 The strong undertow of superstition in Frau Balicke's feelings needs to be borne in mind, in order to appreciate her hysterical reaction when Kragler does actually appear in her living room at the end of the act. Anna Balicke shares her mother's superstitious anxiety about taking Murk in place of Kragler. This is made clear when Balicke becomes angry with her: "That's just your damned fear of ghosts! Get yourself a man, and you won't need to be afraid of ghosts at night any more" (TN, 12). The psychological basis of her anxiety is guilt and an inability simply to bury the past.
