Contemporary readers must have relished in particular the passages from the second Mémoire in which the hapless Madame Goëzman is interrogated by her adversary; the best-known of such passages is no doubt the climax of the interrogation in which Beaumarchais virtually traps her into admitting that she had received the 15 louis of which she denied all knowledge. But the preamble to this shows the consummate skill of a dramatist who knows how to make even the briefest snatches of dialogue reveal consistency of character: at the end of this interrogation we feel we know the naïve young woman, with her vanity, her limited intelligence and the greed that has led to her undoing, as well as we know the characters of a novel or a comic drama.

De quelle veille parlez-vous donc, madame? – Eh! (6)11 If the second Mémoire contains the most lively rejoinder to the falsehoods and inventions of Beaumarchais’s enemies, the fourth is another collector’s item.
