26 While James designed this deﬁnition to be as inclusive as possible by insisting that religion does not necessarily presuppose belief in God, his perspective remains limited in at least two important ways. First, and most obviously, by focusing on the solitary individual, James reduces the social dimensions of selfhood and aspects of religion to a secondary status. Any approach to the study of religion that privileges the individual at the expense of the social or vice versa is inadequate. Second, James acknowledges that religion involves different ways of thinking and acting but concentrates on experience, which he regards as primarily affective.
